The Gigajam method.

The best way teach yourself, improve and be able to play whatever you want, is to practice.

But wait a minute, practice is often tedious, unfocused and boring. What Gigajam have done, is make practice much easier, more focused and more fun. A team of professional musicians and teachers spent two years writing carefully thought out lessons and accompanying software.

How do I learn to play the Keyboard with Gigajam?

Step 1 : Learn stuff!

First you read our professionally written lesson notes. Or if you don't fancy reading then they will also read themselves to you at the click of a button! They are readily printable, allowing you to study away from your computer.

Step 2 : Watch an exercise video!

You won't be reading for long before you come across one of the many exercises. Here you'll be able to put into practice the skills you have just been reading about.

Each exercise has it's own video, about a hundred or so altogether in Level 1. Here is let last exercise from Lesson One, which shows you how much you have learned by following each step and building on the last.

Step 3 : Hand's on Practice!

Now it's time to load up Xtractor, our practice engine software, and get practical. Each exercise has an icon that launches the attached play-along file in Xtractor.

Xtractor is very simple to use, it's just like your car stereo or hi-fi. It gives you a virtual band to practice along with. This encourages you to keep up and keep in time, as well as making practice more fun as you are no longer sitting playing by yourself.

As you play the execise you can change tempo, customise the volume of the band parts, and loop any section you want to pay extra attention to.

Repeating each exercise you can clearly hear your improvement as you begin to come together with the rest of the band.

Each exercise builds on the previous one until you are playing things that would have seemed daunting without the gradual build up of skills upon skills.

Optional Step 4 : MIDI Analysis

Optionally, if you have access to a MIDI enabled keyboard then you can record your practice performance into Xtractor and make use of Xtractor's analysis function.

Analyser gives you immediate visual feedback of where you went wrong, where you need to improve and where to concentrate your next practice session.

You can still learn perfectly well without analysis, it's really just an added bonus if you have the MIDI equipment to make use of it.

Optional Step 5 : Earn acreditation

Together with the Open College Network you can earn fourteen Credits for Learning on completion of Essential Keyboard Skills Level 1.

These credits can be used towards gaining entry to further and higher education in the UK.

How much does Level 1 teach me?

The 10 lessons in Level 1 cover all the skills required by Music Grades 1 to 3. That's a lot of learning. Here's a clip from our Keyboard TV show demonstrating some of the skills you will have learned by the end of Level 1. It may seem daunting now, but you'll be learning all this step-by-step.
